Hoktiwe Film

Hoktiwe: Two Poems in Ishakkoy is a 2020 pandemic film collaboration between Bulbancha-based Indigenous camera artist Fernando López and Jeffery U. Darensbourg.

It features Jeffery’s words and music and Fernando’s cinematography.  The Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans commissioned it for the exhibition Make America What America Must Become.

It is the first film in the Ishakkoy language, incorrectly known as Atakapan. It's based on two of Darensbourg's original poems, which were written and published in Ishakkoy.

The title poem, Hoktiwe,”  was published in the Indigenous studies journal Transmotion. Jeffery’s peer-reviewed journal article about the film in Genealogy, “We Are Together Now,” gives additional information about the project.
